Dick Williams was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, to Italian immigrant parents. His father, a former minor league pitcher, introduced Dick to the game of baseball at an early age. Growing up during the Great Depression, Williams developed a strong work ethic, which would serve him well throughout his life.
Williams attended St. Paul's Central High School and played on the school's baseball team. He was discovered by the Boston Red Sox while playing in a local tournament, signing with the team as an amateur free agent in 1946.
