Jeffrey R. Holland grew up in St. John, Utah, and developed a strong interest in education and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) from an early age. He served as a missionary in France from 1960 to 1962 before returning to the United States to pursue higher education.

Holland earned his Bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University (BYU), Master's degree from Yale University, and Ph.D. in American Studies from Yale University. He began teaching at BYU in 1964 and remained there until 1973 when he was called by LDS Church president Spencer W. Kimball to serve as a member of the church's Quorum of Twelve Apostles.
