Phil Murphy was born on August 15, 1957. He is the son of a successful businessman, Philip Dunlap "P.D." Murphy Sr., who served as a U.S. Marine Corps Major during World War II. Murphy's father also worked for several prominent companies including General Electric, IBM and Mobil Oil.
Growing up in Massachusetts, Murphy attended Choate Rosemary Hall before moving to New Jersey. He graduated from Princeton University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics in 1979.
