It's a big job, and it's amazing to me that the city has done so well without someone dedicated to the parks. Everyone here has been responsible for many things, and I hope I can take some of the workload off people who already have plenty to do.

This is a terrific opportunity, and I can't wait to really start contributing.

It was an elimination game, and both teams were tight. We sure didn't want to be the team getting eliminated. Our kids just buckled up in the second half.

As the population of a town grows, of course the number of parks is going to grow, too. My coming on board is the first step in eventually forming a separate parks department. But first, I need to learn where all the parks are. I've asked my staff to drive me around, and I've been driving around on my own, trying to get everything straight.

I was ready to move on with my career, and I learned of the Johnston position after I agreed to interview for a position in Nebraska. On the way back, my wife, Donna, and I decided to drive through Johnston to see just how interested we would be in coming here should an opportunity present itself. We immediately liked what we saw.

That's the thing we can do. We can shoot the ball well.
